The African Wildlife Foundation on behalf of the National Forestry Authority (NFA) is seeking the services of a senior consultant to review tourism / visitor management standards and guidelines in Central Forest Reserves (CFRs). NFA is a semi-autonomous government organization established under section 52 of the National Forestry and Tree Planting Act (2003) to sustainably manage and develop all Central Forest Reserves (CFRs). NFA partners with the private sector to develop eco-tourism sites in the CFRs that it manages.

The overall purpose of Review is to:

  • Review the approach and standards underpinning NFA’s management of tourism / visitor activities in Central Forest Reserves
  • Create guidelines for developing and managing tourism in Central Forest Reserves that underpin NFAs ecotourism principles and standards
  • Develop a straight-forward quality assurance and monitoring framework for ensuring that the ecotourism principles, standards and supporting guidelines are implemented as designed
  • Provide inputs and improvements to NFA’s draft Ecotourism Strategic Development Plan.

Experience and Qualifications

The consultant shall have a minimum of a masters’ degree in Tourism or a relevant field with extensive experience (at least 10 years) of working with or in the tourism industry. They should have a strong understanding of best practices in the development and management of eco-tourism in and around protected areas. They must have a practical outlook, excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills, be able to demonstrate incisive thinking, and be able to write succinctly. They should ideally have reasonable experience in training and organizational development management. They must be able to demonstrate a track record of having successfully carried out consulting assignments in a timely manner and to a high standard.
