Esmond Bradley Martin, one of the world’s premier wildlife researchers and investigators, was found dead at his home on Sunday. Bradley Martin was an eccentric and driven protector of wildlife who frequently set aside his own safety to further the public’s understanding of the illegal ivory and rhino horn trades.
“It’s a tragedy and a setback,” said Philip Muruthi, vice president of species protection for AWF. “He brought the data. He brought the information to really inform people on the demand side of the trade and what the markets are all about.”
Bradley Martin, according to police reports, was the victim of a botched burglary. It’s unclear if his killing was motivated by his work against illegal trafficking. His work was influential in China’s decision to shutter their ivory market, and his recent investigations revealed how Laos and Vietnam’s ivory markets are currently growing.
