Wildlife Watch: More Gorilla Newborns

SEVEN MOUNTAIN GORILLAS have been born in Rwanda since April, a promising sign for the survival of this highly endangered species. The world's only remaining mountain gorillas live in Rwanda, Zaire and Uganda. Rwanda is struggling to recover from the 1994 civil war that killed 500,000 people. Hundreds of thousands more were displaced, and many fled through the gorillas' habitat.

"It is very encouraging to register such a high number of births, given all the bad incidents that took place in this area," said Annette Lanjouw of the International Gorilla Conservation Program, a coalition supported by AWF, Fauna and Flora International and the World Wide Fund for Nature. Three of the infants were born to a group of mountain gorillas often viewed by tourists. The other four were born to a group studied at one time by researcher Dian Fossey.
