AWF and TUI Care Foundation Enhance Access to Clean Water in Taita Taveta County

In the semi-arid landscapes of Taita Taveta County, Kenya, access to clean water is not just a convenience but a lifeline for people, livestock, and wildlife. The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and TUI Care Foundation have recently commissioned the Diwadane Water Project within the TUI Wildlife Kenya program as part of a holistic approach to conservation and community development.

In line with the TUI Care Foundation's mandate to enhance biodiversity, protect endangered animals and their natural habitats, AWF initiated the construction of this borehole to secure a sustainable water supply for over 20,000 residents. Situated in Mlughi village, Bura Ward, the Diwadane borehole directly tackles the persistent water scarcity issue, which has often sparked conflicts between locals and wildlife vying for this essential resource.

In December 2023, AWF further solidified its commitment by solarizing the borehole and installing a water pump, resulting in the construction of a towering water structure equipped with a 10,000-liter tank. This infrastructure represents a significant stride forward and assures the community of a sustainable water supply.

During the recent launch, Simon Mwakio, Chief of Bura Ward, voiced the sentiments of the residents who welcomed the project. 

“This project marks a crucial milestone in ensuring sustainable access to this precious resource for our community and the diverse wildlife dependent on it for survival,” remarked Mwakio. “By delivering reliable water sources, the project bolsters our farmers' livelihoods and fortifies the resilience of our entire community.”

Suleiman Msabaa, Chairman of the Diwadane Cooperative Society, expressed gratitude and optimism regarding the project's benefits. 

“It offers us, as farmers, dependable access to clean water for irrigation and livestock, and it also enhances the overall well-being of our community while promoting sustainable development. We are truly thankful to AWF and TUI Care Foundation for this initiative, and we eagerly anticipate the positive outcomes of our efforts,” stated Msabaa.

The Diwadane Water Project extends beyond infrastructure development by prioritizing community empowerment. 

AWF spearheaded a collaborative effort that engaged members of the Diwadane Farmers’ Cooperative Sacco and other community members, who contributed labor to the project. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of ownership and ensures long-term sustainability.

This borehole not only provides essential water access to residents but also plays a vital role in sustaining the diverse wildlife population in the area,” Hinga remarked.

She added, “We remain steadfast in our mission to support projects that promote the coexistence of communities and wildlife, ultimately creating a more sustainable future for all."
