AWF is Accepting Applications for Scholarships Under the MacArthur Professional Leadership in Conservation Award

Since its founding in 1961, the African Wildlife Foundation has believed that Africans are the ideal stewards of Africa's natural resources. This core belief led AWF to assist in establishing the first school to train African wildlife managers in Tanzania in 1961. During its early decades, AWF helped to establish and support wildlife clubs in several African countries to help raise the awareness and interest of a new generation in the importance of conservation. AWF has also provided scholarships and educated hundreds of African in conservation studies to assure the survival of Africa's wildlife heritage.

Today, over 85% of AWF's staff are African professionals living and working in Africa. AWF continues to invest in training and scholarship opportunities every year with the goal of enhancing the effectiveness and impact of African nationals in the fields relevant to conservation and sustainable development through the increased knowledge, skills, and credentials obtained through an advanced degree.

Under the MacArthur Professional Leadership in Conservation Award, AWF is currently offering scholarships for full or partial MSc or Ph.D. programs with field research components that produce knowledge offering solutions or insight into specific conservation challenges that complement AWF's conservation programs in the African Heartlands. The countries of focus for this year's program are Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Expenses that AWF expects to cover under the scholarship will vary depending on the individual program selected by the scholarship recipient, but each scholarship is valued at a maximum cost of US$ 20,000.
