High-Level Plenary on Climate Change and the Biodiversity Nexus

8:30-10:30 - Auditorium

There will be a Leadership Dialogue on PCAs at the centre of the “climate and Biodiversity nexus”. The discussions will focus on the message that PCAs should be a first choice for NBS and how that can be carried forward in climate discussions. It will explore what would it mean for Africa and the planet to lose existing carbon sink ecosystems, and the urgency to protect them. The need for PCAs to adapt and help people adapt to climate change will be highlighted.

The session will be Moderated by Imen Meliane, Regional Councillor Africa, IUCN. The keynote address will be given by:

  • David Obura, CEO CORDIO East Africa (a member of ACBA's Steering Committee) 

 

There will be a panel with the following panelists:

  1. Hon Jeanne d’arc Mujawamariya, Minister of Environment, Rwanda
  2. Hon Beatrice Anywar Atim, Minister of State for Environment, Uganda
  3. Hon. Aissata Daouda Diallo, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Mauritania
  4. Elizabeth Wathuti – Environment and Climate activists, Kenya
  5. Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Coordinator of the Association of Peul Women and Autochthonous Peoples of Chad

 

This will be followed by an open question and answer session and a concluding summary by the moderator


ABCG Global Change Impacts on Biodiversity Conservation Clinic

8:30-10:30 - MH1

The Global Change Impacts group of the Africa Biodiversity Collaborative Group (ABCG) is documenting how human communities are being impacted by changes in climate, how they are responding to these impacts, and how their responses effect livelihoods and biodiversity. Learn to build tools and guidance for use by governments, NGOs, and the communities to develop climate change coping strategies in future conservation and land-use planning efforts.


Harnessing the spatial information revolution for improved protected area management decision-making

12:00-14:00 - AWF Pavilion

GIS and related tools present valuable and unique opportunities for more effective management of P&CAs. This workshop will be led and facilitated by ESRI with support from AWF. ESRI will spotlight tools that can be implemented by APADs in their management of P&CAs.

Each Stream Session moderated by Stream leads.

Each stream receives reports from Cross-Cutting themes, relevant side events and pavilions.


African Conservation Voices Screening and Networking

17:00-18:00 - AWF Pavilion (Invite Only)

To create an understanding and appreciation of conservation through quality storytelling from young Africans that are seeking impactful and sustainable change within the continent, this networking session is aimed at creating new and effective partnerships.
