A buffalo enjoys a mud-bath in the scorching heat of the African sun. These large and often dangerous animals continue to capture the imagination.

A shining example of how to grow through the ranks of AWF, Nesbert Samu has worked with AWF in southern Africa since 2000, and was recently appointed Heartland Director for our Kazungula Heartland.

Early in his career, Nesbert was focusing on conservation enterprises. He assisted communities and the private sector in brokering business deals that leveraged land for conservation and developed and enhanced community livelihoods – such as the Santawani Lodge in Botswana.

Nesbert then moved on to the role of coordinating implementation of the EU-funded SUBRAP project (“Scaling up Benefits for Rural Area Population”), a project that is providing support to activities in the three southern African Heartlands. Through SUBRAP, Nesbert helps facilitate the creation of community land trusts - legally recognized trusts through which villages can co-manage their pooled resources in ways that supplement their livelihoods.

Nesbert has a Bachelor of Science in Rural and Urban Planning, Master of Science in Human ecology and is undertaking an Executive MBA at the University of Bulawayo.
