In a 40-50 year lifetime, a female mountain gorilla might have only 2-6 surviving offspring. This slow reproduction makes this species even more threatened.

Help Protect Mountain Gorillas
AWF
Support the International Gorilla Conservation Program

AWF works to protect the highly endangered mountain gorilla through the International Gorilla Conservation Program (IGCP), a conservation coalition established by the African Wildlife Foundation, Fauna and Flora International, and the Worldwide Fund for Nature. The coalition has been a tremendous success, helping the once declining mountain gorilla population grow more than 15 percent. Still, only an estimated 720 mountain gorillas remain in the world, living in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). And in 2007, 10 mountain gorilla killings in the DRC shocked the world, threatening to reverse decades of conservation progress. IGCP responded quickly, providing emergency funding and support to park rangers, never veering from its threefold mission: to strengthen gorilla habitat protection across regions, research the dynamic between the human population and the natural habitat/wildlife, and work with local communities to develop livelihood strategies that complement conservation objectives. But to continue protecting these highly endangered great apes, IGCP needs your support.
